I am teaching reduced rate Tai Chi classes specifically geared toward anyone with physical disabilities. Whether you are on wheels, missing a limb, have nerve damage, suffer chronic pain, have muscle atrophy, or have any of a number of maladies which have put you into the category of “disabled,” Tai Chi is ideally suited to work around physical disabilities and still provide exceptional no-impact exercise. I’m living proof.
I’ve been a Tai Chi practitioner for seventeen years and have been disabled for seven. I’ve competed in national tournaments, winning medals in forms and sparring competitions. I have mastered forms in Yang, Chen, Wu, and Sun Tai Chi styles. These include open-hand, long and short straight sword, broad sword, spear, deer-horn knives, and even a rather snazzy Shaolin cane form. When done properly, Tai Chi is an exceptional aerobic exercise which improves cardiac function, increases core strength, heightens balance, opens joints, and aids in overall mobility.
